Chapter 3 - THE PERFECT ACCUSATION

By morning, Sarah was no longer treated only as Caleb’s mother.

She was treated as a possible suspect.

The green bottle had been found in her bag. Amber told investigators she had seen Sarah handling it. A park volunteer remembered Sarah arguing with Caleb about eating lunch.

Small facts became a dangerous story.

Sarah’s attorney, Melissa Grant, arrived before sunrise.

“Do not argue with Amber,” she warned. “Do not text her. Do not post anything. She is building a record.”

Sarah looked toward Caleb’s hospital room.

“She hurt my child.”

“Then we prove it.”

Caleb remembered almost nothing after playing near the picnic table.

He did remember Lily looking frightened.

“Lily said her mom was mad at Grandma,” he whispered.

“Why?”

“She said Grandma changed the papers.”

Sarah thought immediately of the trust.

Police examined the green bottle. The cap had been opened recently, despite appearing closed when Sarah found it. Someone had carefully reseated the safety ring to make it look untouched.

That detail made the situation worse.

Amber’s attorney argued Sarah had staged the bottle to blame Amber after Caleb became ill.

Sarah could barely believe the audacity.

Then Child Protective Services arrived.

Someone had filed an emergency complaint claiming Sarah had been misusing prescription medication in front of Caleb for months.

Anonymous.

Detailed.

False.

The complaint included photographs of bottles inside Sarah’s kitchen cabinet.

Sarah recognized the photographs.

They were taken inside her house.

Melissa asked who had been there recently.

Sarah listed family members.

Michael.

Eleanor.

Amber.

Lily.

A babysitter.

Two cousins.

Amber had visited three weeks earlier for a birthday dinner.

She had been alone in the kitchen for several minutes.

“That’s not enough,” Melissa said.

Amber was careful.

She did not deny being in the kitchen.

She said Sarah had asked her to retrieve plates.

Every incriminating circumstance had an innocent explanation ready.

Michael finally arrived from his business trip.

Sarah expected fury.

Instead, he looked confused.

“Amber says you’ve been under pressure.”

Sarah stared at him.

“What?”

“She said you haven’t been sleeping.”

“My son collapsed and your sister accused me.”

“I’m trying to understand.”

Sarah felt something break inside her.

“You understand by believing me.”

Michael lowered his voice.

“I do believe you.”

But he did not say Amber was lying.

That mattered.

Hours later, Melissa received the park security footage.

One camera faced the picnic tables.

Sarah leaned forward.

Amber appeared near Sarah’s handbag.

Then a man in a baseball cap passed directly in front of the camera.

For eleven seconds, the view was blocked.

When he moved away, Amber was standing several feet from the bag.

Melissa paused the video.

“That man.”

Sarah zoomed in.

She knew him.

His name was Victor Hale.

Amber’s estranged husband.

And according to Amber, Victor had been in Chicago all weekend.
