Chapter 10 - THE LETTER TO HIS MOTHER
Margaret kept Luke’s letter unopened for two days.
Then Emily found it.
The family was gathered at Sarah’s house because nobody wanted to be alone while search operations continued.
Emily picked up the envelope from the coffee table.
“Daddy?”
Margaret’s face collapsed.
“Yes.”
Emily held it out.
“Daddy.”
Margaret took the letter.
Opened it.
Luke had written:
Mom,
I know why you are pushing Easton. You watched Grandpa almost lose everything in 2008 and you promised yourself urgency would never beat you again.
You are not wrong that Nathan and I sometimes wait too long because we want a perfect answer.
But fear makes you treat disagreement like disloyalty.
If anything happens to me, Sarah gets my vote. Not because she knows the company better than you. She does not. Because she knows me, and because Emily needs one parent whose authority the family cannot absorb.
Do not make my absence an argument for taking more control.
Margaret stopped.
Could not continue.
Nathan finished silently.
The final paragraph:
If Easton becomes necessary, do it. Save the company. Just do not pretend necessity makes every term fair.
Margaret folded the letter.
Sarah expected an apology.
Instead Margaret said:
“He still admits Easton may be necessary.”
Sarah almost laughed.
Nathan did.
A short, broken sound.
“Mom.”
“What?”
“You just read that whole letter and found the sentence that proves you right.”
Margaret’s eyes filled.
“That is how I survive.”
There it was.
Her defense and her flaw in one sentence.
She had survived poverty.
Her husband’s illness.
The 2008 collapse.
Her father’s death.
Years of family business emergencies.
She survived by finding the action she could control.
Luke’s disappearance gave her no action.
So she seized the company.
Sarah finally understood Margaret.
Understanding did not absolve her.
That night Major Hayes called again.
This time he did not begin with “Mrs. Carter.”
