Chapter 1 - THE LAST VEHICLE

By eight in the morning, two-year-old Emily Carter had already called three strangers Daddy.

The military homecoming pickup area was bright with morning sun, families pressed against barriers, duffel bags hitting pavement, children waving handmade signs, and soldiers stepping down from buses into waiting arms.

Emily understood almost none of it.

She understood uniforms.

She understood that her father wore one.

She understood the small bouquet Sarah had bought the night before was for him.

“Daddy flowers,” Emily had said at breakfast.

Sarah had smiled even though she had barely slept.

“Yes. Daddy flowers.”

The first group arrived.

Emily tore free from Sarah’s hand and ran toward the first uniformed man she saw.

She wrapped both arms around his leg.

“DADDY!”

The soldier looked down in surprise, then crouched.

“Hey, sweetheart. I’m not your daddy.”

Emily stared at his face.

Wrong.

She let go, spun around, saw another soldier, and ran again.

“Daddy?”

Wrong again.

By noon, it had happened six times.

By afternoon, Emily no longer shouted before she reached them. She ran, looked up, searched the face, and then backed away.

The bouquet began to droop.

“Daddy where?”

Sarah forced a smile.

“He’s coming.”

She had repeated those words for eleven months.

Luke Carter’s deployment had been extended twice. His last message, four days earlier, had been short.

Home soon. Kiss Em for me.

By sunset, the pickup area had thinned.

Sarah checked her phone.

No missed calls.

No official messages.

No Luke.

Emily sat on the pavement, exhausted, clutching crushed flowers.

“Come on, baby,” Sarah whispered. “We should go.”

Emily shook her head violently.

“No. Daddy.”

Then headlights turned into the nearly empty lot.

A military vehicle pulled up.

Emily shot to her feet.

Her whole face lit.

“DADDY!”

She ran so fast one shoe nearly came off.

The passenger door opened.

A single uniformed officer stepped out.

Forty, maybe.

Serious face.

Cap in hand.

No Luke.

Emily held the bouquet toward him.

“Daddy?”

The officer looked at Sarah.

“Mrs. Carter?”

Sarah’s body went cold.

Emily looked behind him, searching the vehicle.

Nobody else stepped out.

The officer removed his cap completely.

“Ma’am, I’m Major Aaron Hayes. There’s been an incident involving your husband’s convoy.”

Sarah heard the words but not their meaning.

“Where is Luke?”

“He is currently listed as missing in action.”

The bouquet slipped from Emily’s hands.

She stared at the empty vehicle.

“Daddy?”

May you like

Then Major Hayes said something that made Sarah’s grief turn instantly into suspicion.

“We believed your family had already been notified yesterday.”
