Chapter 11 - THE SECRET MARGARET USED AS LOVE

Serena went white.

“Mom.”

Margaret ignored her.

At twenty-seven, Serena had suffered more than a breakdown.

She had attempted suicide after her engagement collapsed and the procurement complaint threatened her career.

The room became silent.

Adrienne felt sick.

Not because Serena had struggled.

Because Margaret had exposed it publicly.

To save her.

Again.

Margaret said:

“My daughter survived because this company gave her purpose.”

Serena whispered:

“Stop.”

Margaret continued.

“You remove her from leadership, you do not know what you are doing.”

Adrienne stared at her mother.

“This is cruel.”

Margaret turned.

“I am protecting her.”

“No. You’re using her worst night as a corporate argument.”

Serena stood.

“Mom, shut up.”

Margaret froze.

Serena’s face was burning with humiliation.

For once, the favorite daughter understood exactly what Adrienne had lived with.

Private pain becoming family leverage.

Serena looked at Adrienne.

Then at the board.

“I was sick.”

Her voice shook.

“I got treatment.”

She turned to Margaret.

“And you promised no one would ever use it against me.”

Margaret whispered:

“I’m trying to save—”

“No.”

Serena’s voice cracked.

“You’re trying to save the version of me that needs you.”

The sentence broke something in Margaret’s face.

Adrienne saw it.

Serena did too.

For the first time, both sisters stood on the same side of a truth.

Margaret had not favored Serena because she believed Serena stronger.

She favored Serena because she needed Serena dependent.

Serena’s status obsession had grown inside a bargain:

Perform excellence.

Receive protection.

Never become independent enough to reject Margaret.

Adrienne left.

Serena stayed.

Both paid.

The board adjourned.

Outside, Serena sat alone on a bench.

Adrienne approached but kept distance.

“I didn’t know.”

Serena laughed bitterly.

“Congratulations.”

“I mean it.”

“I know.”

Silence.

Then Adrienne said:

“What you did to Chloe is still unforgivable.”

Serena nodded.

“Yes.”

That surprised her.

Serena stared ahead.

“I saw the juice and I saw thirty people watching me look imperfect.”

Adrienne said nothing.

“I pushed her before I even thought.”

“That makes it worse.”

“I know.”

Another silence.

Serena looked at her.

“I’m sorry.”

Adrienne did not say she forgave her.

Serena did not ask.

That mattered.

Then Serena said:

“Northstar is not what Mom thinks.”

Adrienne frowned.

“What do you mean?”

“They’re planning to sell the real estate after closing.”

“Did you know?”

“I found out yesterday.”

“And you still presented them.”

“I didn’t have another option.”

Adrienne looked at her.

“Yes, you did.”

Serena closed her eyes.

“Step down.”

“Yes.”

Serena laughed softly.

“You make it sound easy.”

“No.”

Adrienne’s voice softened.

“I make it sound necessary.”

Then Serena revealed one final fact.

“Northstar already has a voting agreement.”

“With whom?”

May you like

Serena looked toward the boardroom doors.

“Dad.”
