Chapter 8 - MICHAEL'S SECOND SECRET
Titan Capital’s founder was Henry Cole.
Patrick’s father.
Michael’s uncle.
Adrienne stared at Patrick.
He looked almost as shocked as she felt.
“Did you know?”
“No.”
“Did Michael?”
Patrick went silent.
Again.
Adrienne laughed in disbelief.
“Of course he did.”
Patrick looked ashamed.
“I think he discovered it.”
“When?”
“Before he died.”
Adrienne stood.
“You keep giving me pieces of my husband after everyone else already had them.”
Patrick did not defend himself.
Serena watched with unexpected sympathy.
That made Adrienne angrier.
“Get out.”
Serena frowned.
“Adrienne—”
“Get out.”
After she left, Patrick explained.
Michael found references to Margaret and Henry Cole while reviewing old financing records.
Henry had invested in Blake & Vale during a crisis thirty-six years earlier.
Adrienne was born the following year.
Raymond married Margaret before the pregnancy became public.
Walter protected the family name.
Henry later founded the investment group that became Titan Capital.
He died when Adrienne was twenty.
She had met him twice at charity events.
Never knowing.
Patrick said:
“Michael ordered private DNA testing from archived family samples.”
Adrienne felt sick.
“And?”
“Henry was almost certainly your biological father.”
She sat down.
That meant Titan’s old preferred shares were not entirely unrelated to her inheritance.
Henry had structured them.
Perhaps for the company.
Perhaps for her.
Patrick opened Michael’s archived notes.
One line:
H.C. BUILT A CONVERSION RIGHT THAT ONLY BECOMES ECONOMICALLY RATIONAL IF A.B. ACTIVATES WALTER TRUST.
Adrienne stared.
Henry Cole and Walter Blake had designed complementary structures.
Two old men had built a future around a daughter who knew nothing.
“Why?”
Patrick whispered:
“To give you a path to control if Margaret ever pushed you out completely.”
Adrienne felt rage rise.
“Everyone loved planning my life.”
“Yes.”
“That is not love.”
“No.”
Patrick looked at her.
“Michael came to the same conclusion.”
He showed her another note.
DO NOT TELL ADRIENNE UNTIL SHE ASKS ABOUT BLAKE & VALE HERSELF. SHE LEFT FOR A REASON. AN INHERITANCE SHOULD NOT BECOME ANOTHER CAGE.
Adrienne’s anger cracked.
Michael had hidden the truth.
But perhaps, unlike Margaret, he had hidden it to preserve her choice.
Still wrong.
Different.
Complicated.
Then Patrick revealed the final piece.
Henry Cole’s Titan shares did not pass entirely to his family.
A private beneficial certificate existed.
Seven percent of Titan voting equity.
Held in trust.
For Adrienne.
She stared.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“If I activate it?”
“You become one of Titan’s largest individual voting holders.”
Adrienne laughed weakly.
“So when I called you and said buy that company…”
Patrick nodded.
“You were unknowingly ordering a company you partially own to acquire another company you partially control.”
The absurdity almost made her cry.
Then her phone rang.
Margaret.
Adrienne answered.
Her mother spoke immediately.
“Serena told you.”
“Yes.”
“Come home.”
“No.”
“Adrienne, this is family.”
She looked toward Chloe’s room.
“No.”
Margaret’s voice hardened.
“If you activate Henry’s trust, Titan’s board will investigate the original Blake financing.”
“So?”
