Chapter 10 - ROWAN'S OWN FAILURE
Rowan wanted Delaney charged, stripped of custody, and removed from the children’s lives.
For about twenty-four hours.
Then Grace made him read the whole timeline.
Delaney had:
left children with a trusted adult,
expected to return the same day,
failed to tell Rowan,
and chose family secrecy over co-parenting transparency.
Serious.
But she had not knowingly left them alone.
Rowan had his own history.
He and Delaney separated partly because Rowan treated every parenting disagreement like a safety emergency.
When Delaney wanted Micah to walk two blocks to school with neighbors, Rowan said no.
When she used a teenage babysitter, Rowan objected.
When she stayed at the old blue house, he called it unsafe.
Some objections were reasonable.
Some became controlling.
Delaney stopped telling him things to avoid conflict.
That secrecy helped create the conditions for disaster.
Grace said:
“You are not responsible for Tessa leaving them.”
“I know.”
“Are you responsible for making communication hard?”
Rowan looked away.
“Yes.”
That did not equal Delaney’s mistake.
It mattered anyway.
Rowan’s lawyer also warned him about weaponizing the neglect case in the divorce.
“If you demand sole custody immediately, Delaney’s counsel will argue you are using an emergency before the facts settle.”
Rowan replied:
“My kids went hungry.”
“Yes.”
“Elsie wouldn’t wake up.”
“Yes.”
“So why wouldn’t I?”
“Because the court will ask whether Delaney knowingly left them alone.”
Rowan knew the answer now.
No.
She left them with Tessa.
Bad judgment.
Not the same as abandonment.
He hated the distinction because fear did not care about legal categories.
Then he looked at Micah asleep in a hospital chair.
Protection was supposed to be about what the children needed next.
Not what Rowan needed someone to pay for.
He asked for:
temporary increased parenting time,
approved-caregiver rules,
and emergency communication requirements.
Not sole custody.
