Chapter 10 - CLAIRE COMES BACK CRYING

Claire appeared at the custody hearing in cream silk and carefully muted makeup.

If Daniel had not seen the bruises on Valerie’s shoulder himself, he might have believed the performance for half a heartbeat.

She looked pale.

Fragile.

Exhausted.

Noah West sat beside her until the judge ordered him removed from representation pending review of his personal relationship with the client and his appearance in the recovered footage.

That landed like a grenade.

Claire’s face flickered for the first time.

Vanessa, sitting in the second row, went white.

A replacement attorney requested a continuance.

Sophie objected immediately.

The judge denied the request.

Then Claire testified.

She admitted leaving the house.

Admitted being with Vanessa.

Admitted Noah had driven her.

Then she began to lie with more skill.

She said she had been overwhelmed and intended to be gone “no more than fifteen minutes.”

She said Daniel’s temper had frightened Valerie before.

She said she feared what Daniel would do if she openly asked for separation.

She said the bruise on Valerie’s shoulder came from trying to keep her from running outside with the baby.

Then Sophie played the footage.

All of it.

The gripping shoulder.

The “you don’t eat until it’s clean.”

The “use the girl if you have to.”

By the time the clip ended, Claire had stopped trying to cry prettily.

Now she just cried.

The judge asked a single question.

“Mrs. Carter, why did you leave two children alone during this?”

Claire whispered, “I panicked.”

“Why were custody papers prepared nine days earlier?”

Silence.

“Why did your attorney appear in the getaway vehicle?”

Claire looked at Vanessa.

That told Daniel everything.

Not who had manipulated whom first.

Only that the alliance was breaking.

Sophie saved Valerie from taking the stand by offering the forensic child interview instead.

In it, Valerie described the milk, the scrubbing, the threat about food, and the line Daniel would never forget for the rest of his life:

“Mom said if Mateo cried too much, Daddy would know I wasn’t good enough.”

Claire began sobbing into both hands.

The judge did not look moved.

He looked angry.

At recess, Vanessa tried to corner Daniel in the hallway.

“You think you’re winning because of one bad afternoon?”

Daniel turned so sharply she took a step back.

“One?”

Vanessa’s smile came out wrong.

Too quick.

Too mean.

“You still don’t understand, do you?”

Before he could answer, Officer Ortiz appeared behind her.

“Ms. Carter, I need a word.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

And Daniel finally understood that someone had found the debt.
