Chapter 9 - THE DOG AND THE PHONE

Rex found the phone.

Of course he did.

Daniel was in the nursery changing Mateo while Valerie colored quietly at the dining table. Officer Ortiz had returned with a tech investigator to photograph the office and pull metadata from the security hub.

Rex started barking at the floor vent near the mudroom.

Not playful barking.

Focused barking.

Daniel opened the vent.

Inside was a second phone wrapped in a dish towel.

Claire’s old backup iPhone.

The one she claimed had broken months ago.

Officer Ortiz bagged it immediately.

By evening the preliminary extraction produced exactly what everyone feared.

Texts between Claire and Vanessa.

Texts between Claire and Noah.

And a set of deleted voice notes Claire had apparently sent herself.

One message from Vanessa read:

He’s still useful because he looks stable on paper. We need him to look dangerous in person.

Another from Noah:

Do not file anything until I have enough to support emergency relief. A scared child and one volatile scene could change everything.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“A scared child.”

Sophie said, “That phrase alone may save your case.”

Then came the worst message of all.

Claire to Vanessa, 8:11 a.m. on the day of the incident:

I don’t know if I can do this to Valerie.

Vanessa’s answer arrived fifty seconds later:

Then do it for Mateo. Once you’re in the house and the accounts are yours, both kids will thank you later.

There was an intimacy in the manipulation that disgusted Daniel more than the greed.

Vanessa knew exactly how to dress selfishness up as sacrifice.

The phone gave them one more shock.

Noah West wasn’t just Claire’s lawyer.

He was her lover.

Six months of messages erased any doubt.

Plans.

Hotel receipts.

Photos.

Declarations Claire had not written to her husband in years.

Daniel read only enough to know.

Then set the device down.

The betrayal itself no longer surprised him.

What did surprise him was that it barely registered beside the thought of Valerie kneeling in spilled milk.

Sophie watched his face.

“Do you want a minute?”

He shook his head.

“No. I want the hearing.”

May you like

But Claire had one final weapon she had not yet played.

And she chose the courtroom to use it.
