Chapter 13 - THE TIMER

Three earlier clips showed the same pattern.
Claire placing Mateo in Valerie’s arms.
Setting a kitchen timer.
Ordering Valerie to complete chores before the timer rang.
One clip ended with Valerie struggling to carry both laundry and the baby.
Another showed Mateo crying while Valerie tried to make a bottle with hands too small and too shaky for the task.
In a third, Claire said:
“If the baby’s still crying when Daddy gets home, I’ll tell him you ignored him.”
Daniel had to stop the playback.
He went outside onto the back step and bent forward until the rage passed enough that he trusted himself to go back inside.
When he returned, Sophie had already emailed the clips to CPS and the district attorney.
“This changes the exposure,” she said.
“Exposure?”
“Criminal neglect. Child endangerment. Witness tampering if they pressured Valerie to lie.”
Daniel sat opposite her.
“What happens to Claire?”
Sophie didn’t answer immediately.
“Legally or personally?”
He laughed once.
“Good question.”
“Legally, it gets worse. Personally…” She glanced toward the hallway where Valerie was brushing her teeth with Rex sitting outside the bathroom door like a furry bodyguard. “That depends on what kind of mother she decides to be when cornered.”
He understood.
Some people confessed.
Some doubled down.
Some begged.
Some blamed.
Claire had already cycled through most of them.
Then Officer Ortiz called with new information.
Noah West had resigned from his firm under threat of immediate ethics investigation.
More interestingly, his office computer had contained a draft petition never filed.
Title: Emergency motion for psychiatric evaluation of Daniel Carter.
Daniel stared at the email copy.
“If they’d gotten me angry enough…”
Sophie nodded.
“One public outburst. One welfare check. One scene with the police. That might have been all they needed to try.”
He sat back.
They had not just planned to take his children and his house.
They had planned to make him appear unstable enough that every protest would help them.
Valerie came into the kitchen then, dragging her blanket.
“Can I sleep in your room?”
Daniel opened his arms.
“Yeah.”
She climbed straight into them, skinny shoulders still tense even when she relaxed.
“I don’t want Mommy to see me in the camera.”
That sentence hit harder than anything from court.
Not fear of being hit.
Not fear of punishment.
Fear of being watched.
Daniel kissed the top of her head.
“She can’t.”
But Valerie shook her head.
“I mean in my dreams.”

The hearing would end soon.
The nightmare part would not.
