Chapter 15 - THE RULING

The judge issued the temporary ruling from the bench.

Daniel received immediate sole legal and physical custody of Valerie and Mateo pending final dissolution proceedings.

Claire was granted no unsupervised contact.

No overnight contact.

No discussion of the case with Valerie.

Any future visitation would begin only after psychiatric evaluation, parenting intervention, and a minimum period of supervised therapeutic contact approved by CPS.

The judge also referred the matter for criminal review.

Vanessa’s role was referred separately.

As for Noah West, the court directed a full ethics report to the state bar and ordered all communication records preserved.

It should have felt triumphant.

It didn’t.

Valerie asked in the car, “Did we win?”

Daniel looked at Sophie over the roof before answering.

Then he said, “You’re safe.”

Valerie considered that.

Then nodded once.

“Okay.”

That was the answer of a child who had outgrown the language of winning.

That evening Daniel made boxed macaroni and cheese because it was the only thing Valerie said she wanted.

She ate in silence with Rex pressed against her leg and Mateo asleep in the swing beside the table.

Halfway through, she whispered, “Can I have more?”

Daniel nearly broke.

Not because of the question.

Because she sounded unsure whether asking for more food was allowed.

He served her a second bowl with steady hands only because he loved her too much to let her see him shaking.

When she finished, she leaned back and yawned.

“Daddy?”

“Yeah?”

“Can Mateo stay with us forever?”

Daniel smiled through the ache in his chest.

“He better.”

She smiled too.

The first real one since the call.

Then she asked, “Even if Mommy gets mad?”

May you like

Daniel reached across the table and took her small hand.

“Especially then.”
