Chapter 4 - THE ADOPTION

Celia and Grant were not biologically related to Evelyn.

That fact did not make them less her children.

She adopted Celia at eight and Grant at six after her sister died from an overdose.

Evelyn raised them.

School.

Therapy.

College.

Bad relationships.

Career starts.

Debt mistakes.

Everything.

They called her Mom.

She called them her children.

After the stroke, outsiders sometimes said:

“At least they’re taking care of you.”

Evelyn hated the phrase.

They were helping.

At first.

Celia organized medication boxes.

Grant handled property maintenance.

Owen drove Evelyn to rehabilitation.

The first months were difficult and generous.

Then generosity became authority.

Celia started answering emails for Evelyn.

Grant approved vendors without asking.

Owen canceled two appointments because:

“You looked tired.”

Evelyn said:

“Ask me.”

They did.

For a while.

Then stopped again.
