Chapter 9 - THE VAN TRIP

The van trip was supposed to be simple.

Evelyn had an appointment with the governance attorney.

Celia insisted on coming.

Grant joined.

Owen drove.

Halfway there, Celia demanded Evelyn cancel the review.

“Enough.”

“No.”

“You’re humiliating us.”

“I’m checking the foundation.”

“You’re checking us.”

“Yes.”

Silence.

Grant turned from the front passenger seat.

“Mom, this has to stop.”

Evelyn said:

“No.”

Celia’s voice changed.

“You think because a doctor said you can make decisions, everyone has to watch you destroy the family?”

Evelyn looked at her.

“I am not destroying anything.”

“You’re choosing strangers over us.”

“No. I am choosing independent review over private explanations.”

That sentence broke the room.

The day of the van trip, Celia had already learned something else.

The outside governance attorney recommended that the board consider separating family members from executive control for at least one year.

Not permanently.

Temporarily.

Celia read that as exile.

Grant read it as humiliation.

Evelyn saw it as a cooling-off period.

Three people read the same recommendation through three different histories.

That was why the argument inside the van was already hot before anyone raised a voice.

Grant told Owen to pull over.

Owen hesitated.

Celia said:

“Keep driving.”

Then she opened the side door.

Evelyn understood too late.
