Chapter 14 - THE FLOOR BENEATH MERCYCatherine refused to answer questions until her attorney arrived.

Ethan waited.
A year earlier, he would have treated delay as guilt and anger as proof.
Now he sat across from the woman who raised him and allowed silence to remain silence.
Finally Catherine said, “The lower floor existed before Mercy House.”
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“What was it?”
“A reproductive records vault.”
“Why did you build a children’s residence above it?”
“To watch who came for the records.”
“You used the children as surveillance.”
“I placed security around them.”
“You placed danger beneath them.”
Catherine looked older than she had in the black car.
“I believed I could control access.”
The family’s most durable confession.
They entered Mercy House under a joint federal warrant. The upper floors were empty after receivership. Dust covered classroom shelves. Children’s names remained faintly visible on cubbies.
Anna did not come.
Ethan would not turn her history into an operation she had to witness.
Grace remained with Rebecca.
The key inside her storybook opened the elevator.
Below Mercy House stood a medical archive larger than Carter Biotech’s executive floor.
Embryo maps.
Marriage projections.
Guardian assignments.
Career tracks.
The system did not simply create heirs.
It designed the adults around them.
Helena waited beside June.
The child slept in a stroller.
Nora watched through a secure video link. When she saw her daughter, she covered her mouth.
Helena said, “Open the Carter restoration charter.”
“No,” Ethan replied.
“You have not read it.”
“I know what it requires.”
“Do you?”
She projected the document.
The restoration charter did not return Carter Biotech to Samuel.
It transferred the illegal fertility patents into a victim-controlled medical trust.
On the surface, it looked just.
The trustees, however, were the Carter children.
Elias.
Noah.
Anna.
Nora.
June.
And others still missing.
Children would become collective owners of the system that created them.
Helena called it restitution.
Ethan called it inheritance with better language.
Nora spoke through the screen.
“Give me June.”
Helena looked at the sleeping child.
“She recognizes me.”
“She is three.”
“I cared for her.”
“You stole her.”
“I preserved her after your foster placement collapsed.”
Nora went silent.
The fact was true.
Her approved foster caregiver had suffered a medical emergency. Helena took June before child services arrived.
A rescue.
Then leverage.
Always in that order.
Catherine moved closer.
“Helena, let the child go.”
Helena laughed.
“You built a house over my work and called yourself moral.”
“I was wrong.”
The admission angered Helena more than denial.
“You do not get to leave the belief system after using it to become necessary.”
Catherine lowered her eyes.
“No. I get to stop using it now.”
She surrendered the hidden administrative codes.
Federal agents unlocked June’s stroller restraint.
Helena pressed a remote.
The archive entered deletion mode.
Rebecca had anticipated it. Technicians disconnected the lower floor from external power.
The servers froze.
Helena smiled anyway.
“The live archive is not here.”
“Where?” Ethan asked.
She looked at Grace’s storybook.
“The children carry it.”
The keys were not only access devices.
They contained distributed fragments of the full succession system.
Bring the objects together, and the archive rebuilt itself.
Elias’s watch.
Grace’s book.
Anna’s puzzle piece.
Noah’s blanket.
Six more objects with six more children.
Samuel had made the family itself the server.
Helena was arrested.
June entered immediate medical care and began reunification planning with Nora under independent supervision.
Grace asked to see her.
Not as guardian.
As someone who had worried about her.
That distinction was recorded.
Then Elias disappeared from protective housing.
No forced entry.
No injured staff.
He left a note for Rebecca.
I TOOK THE WATCH BECAUSE DAD SAID THE OTHER CHILDREN NEED ME.
A tracking signal activated in Samuel’s luxury watch.
It was moving north.
May you like
Toward the Carter family cemetery.
And Samuel Carter’s grave had been opened from the inside.
