Chapter 17 - THE MAN NO WOMAN REMEMBEREDHis name was Dr. Adrian Vale.

He had directed the fertility laboratory before Julian Mercer became chief medical officer.

Officially, Adrian died twenty-six years earlier.

The death record was signed by Catherine Carter.

She admitted the signature was real.

“I believed he died during a laboratory fire.”

“Did you see a body?” Ethan asked.

“No.”

The family had built an empire of deaths without bodies.

Adrian designed the maternal-authority contracts. He believed biological fathers were too visible and legal mothers too easy to challenge. Gestational carriers, egg donors, adoptive mothers, and female guardians created overlapping claims no court could resolve quickly.

Confusion became control.

He called it reproductive continuity.

Samuel commercialized it.

Catherine secretly redirected it.

Helena preserved it.

Now Adrian had returned to claim it.

Federal agents traced the threat to a former Carter maternity clinic on an island off the Maine coast.

Ethan traveled with Rebecca, Martha, and Evelyn Mercer. Catherine remained hospitalized. Olivia joined through secure video for the upcoming vote.

The clinic stood empty except for a circular conference room.

Twelve chairs.

The Mothers’ Table.

Each chair carried a name.

Olivia.

Catherine.

Evelyn.

Martha.

Helena.

Nora.

Six others.

At the head sat Adrian Vale.

He was seventy-eight, thin, and smiling.

“No one sits at the head,” Ethan said.

Adrian looked amused.

“Your dinner-table reforms have become sentimental mythology.”

“You threatened children.”

“I revealed vulnerability.”

“You drew targets over them.”

“The image was private.”

“So was every crime in this family until someone suffered publicly.”

Adrian explained that Grace and June were never in physical danger. The photograph had been edited to test Olivia’s vote.

Olivia’s voice came through the screen.

“You used my daughters.”

“You used Ethan.”

She did not deny it.

Adrian wanted secrecy because public exposure would invalidate patents created from illegally obtained reproductive material. Billions in treatments could enter legal paralysis.

Again, patients stood behind the threat.

Martha asked, “What happens to the children if the table stays secret?”

“They receive protected distributions.”

“Do they choose?”

“When mature.”

“Who decides maturity?”

“The table.”

Martha stood.

“No.”

Her chair’s authority dissolved when she rejected it.

Evelyn followed.

“I reject.”

Nora rejected.

Three of the unknown maternal authorities appeared by secure link. Two rejected. One abstained.

Helena attempted to vote for secrecy from detention, but her authority had been suspended.

Catherine’s vote arrived in writing.

TEMPORARY SECRECY PENDING CHILD REVIEW.

She still could not release control without conditions.

Olivia held veto power.

Adrian looked at her image.

“You can preserve everything.”

Olivia asked, “Including my sentence?”

“I can support clemency.”

Ethan understood.

Adrian had offered what Olivia always wanted.

Freedom purchased with other people’s dependence.

Grace entered the conference feed with her advocate.

“You do not have to save me,” she told Olivia.

Olivia’s face broke.

“I am your mother.”

“Yes.”

“I left you.”

“Yes.”

“I carried Noah for them.”

“Yes.”

Grace did not comfort her.

She simply removed the excuse.

Olivia voted to dissolve the Mothers’ Table.

Adrian pressed the override.

The system rejected him.

He was not a maternal authority.

For all his design, he had built himself outside the final power.

Federal agents arrested him.

The maternal trust entered independent receivership. Patent licenses remained active through emergency public-interest orders. Child records stayed sealed unless each subject chose release.

The crisis ended without one person winning.

That was how Ethan knew the structure had truly changed.

Then Rebecca discovered Adrian’s personal archive.

It contained evidence of a ninth Carter embryo.

Not one of Samuel and Catherine’s.

Samuel and Evelyn Mercer’s.

Created after Ethan’s birth without Evelyn’s knowledge.

Status: implanted.

Child: female.

Age: thirty-five.

Name: Rebecca Lane.

Rebecca stared at the record.

“No.”

Genetic testing confirmed Samuel Carter was her biological father.

Evelyn Mercer was her biological mother.

Rebecca was Ethan’s full sister.

The independent attorney had been a Carter child all along.

She looked at Ethan.

“Did they choose me for Noah because of blood?”

“Probably.”

“Then I was never independent.”

“You were independent when you told all of us Noah was not the prize at the end of our remorse.”

“That does not erase this.”

“No.”

She left the island alone.

Not forever.

For now.

Three days later, Rebecca submitted a notice withdrawing as counsel for every Carter child.

Attached was a single line:

I NEED TO LEARN WHETHER I CAN CHOOSE THIS WORK AFTER KNOWING WHY I WAS LED TO IT.

Ethan respected the decision.

Then Noah’s new temporary counsel called.

Anna had received a letter.

It was written in Rebecca’s handwriting.

Rebecca swore she had not sent it.

The letter contained the locations of the four separated archive keys.

And invited Anna to collect them.
