Chapter 16 - THE WOMAN WHO REMEMBERED THE CODECatherine survived.

The bullet damaged her liver but missed major vessels.
The implanted device contained no complete archive.
It held one line of executable code and a list of names.
Eight Carter children.
Twelve Bennett wards.
Twenty-four Mercer medical subjects.
The family network was larger than blood.
Martha found her own name.
So did Daniel.
So did Rebecca.
Rebecca stared at the screen.
“I was not born into this family.”
“You represented Noah,” Ethan said.
“That may be why I was selected.”
Her father had served as a judge in one of Samuel’s sealed embryo cases. Rebecca’s scholarship came from the Bennett Foundation. Her appointment as Noah’s independent counsel had been recommended by a court administrator linked to Helena.
Even the independent lawyer may have been guided toward the case.
Rebecca sat down.
“Then every decision I made—”
“Was yours,” Ethan said.
“You cannot know that.”
“No. Neither can you. But the answer is not to surrender your judgment to the people who built the road.”
She looked at him.
The sentence he gave Daniel now returned to her.
Independent did not mean untouched.
It meant accountable.
The remote access signal came from a Carter Biotech satellite laboratory in Massachusetts.
Director: Dr. Evelyn Mercer.
Ethan’s biological mother denied opening the implant.
Her credentials had been copied.
But security footage showed her entering the lab.
She watched it twice.
“That is me.”
“Do you remember going?” Ethan asked.
“No.”
Medical tests found traces of a memory-blocking sedative.
Julian Mercer had developed the compound years earlier for trauma treatment. Samuel repurposed it for witness manipulation.
Evelyn may have opened the device while drugged.
Or she may have acted and forgotten.
The uncertainty devastated her.
“I wanted to know you honestly,” she told Ethan.
“You still can.”
“What if I helped them?”
“Then we find out what you did.”
“You would stay?”
“I did not say that.”
Honesty was not reassurance.
It was ground.
The laboratory logs showed Evelyn’s copied credentials transferred the fifth key to an external account named CARTER MATERNAL AUTHORITY.
The account recognized only women who had carried, donated genetic material, or signed maternal agreements connected to the program.
Catherine.
Evelyn.
Olivia.
Martha.
Helena.
Nora.
And dozens of surrogates.
Samuel built the visible succession around fathers and sons.
The hidden control belonged to mothers.
Or to signatures taken from them.
Olivia requested a meeting from prison.
She said Helena once mentioned “the Mothers’ Table.”
A group created to ensure the fertility children could survive if Samuel’s male heirs destroyed one another.
“Who led it?” Rebecca asked.
Olivia answered, “Catherine.”
Ethan looked toward the hospital room.
Catherine had not merely built Mercy House.
She had created a competing succession network.
She admitted it when confronted.
“I needed authority Samuel could not see.”
“You used women’s reproductive histories as credentials.”
“With consent when possible.”
“And when not?”
Catherine closed her eyes.
“Emergency signatures.”
Another phrase for theft.
The Mothers’ Table controlled the patents Samuel tried to reclaim through Elias. It also held medical trust funds worth billions.
Catherine claimed the network had been dormant.
The fifth-key transfer activated it.
A vote was scheduled in seven days.
Every listed maternal authority would decide whether the trust became public, remained secret, or transferred to the Carter children.
But one vote carried veto power.
Olivia Bennett.
Because she carried Noah and held the oldest valid gestational contract tied to Samuel’s final succession plan.
Olivia laughed when told.
“He spent years treating me like a container.”
Now the system treated her like a queen.
Ethan said, “Do not confuse being used with being entitled to use others.”
Her smile disappeared.
Grace asked to attend the vote through her child advocate.
Nora requested participation.
Martha refused any authority over Noah.
Evelyn wanted her stolen signature removed.
Catherine insisted secrecy still protected children.
The seven-day countdown began.
Then Olivia received a photograph in prison.
Grace and June stood outside the courthouse under federal protection.
A red target had been drawn over both children.
The message read:
VOTE FOR SECRECY OR LOSE BOTH DAUGHTERS.

At the bottom was a name Ethan had not heard before.
THE FATHER OF THE MOTHERS’ TABLE.
