Chapter 1 - I SAW YOU HIT HER

Jason Bennett grabbed Emma so quickly she did not understand what was happening.

One second the eight-year-old girl stood beside the couch.

The next, her uncle struck her hard enough to knock her backward onto the cushions.

Emma went limp.

Jason froze.

Then looked toward the doorway.

“CLAIRE!”

Claire Bennett ran into the living room.

She saw her daughter lying motionless and dropped beside her.

“EMMA?! WAKE UP!”

Emma was breathing.

Claire touched her cheek.

“Baby, open your eyes.”

Jason backed away.

His face changed.

Panic appeared where calculation had been.

“What did you DO?!”

Claire whipped around.

“What are you talking about?!”

Jason pointed at Emma.

“I SAW YOU HIT HER!”

Claire stopped.

The accusation was so insane her mind rejected it.

Then the front door opened.

Robert Bennett stormed into the room.

He saw:

Emma unconscious,

Claire kneeling beside her,

Jason pointing.

“What happened?!”

Jason answered instantly.

“CLAIRE DID IT!”

Claire stood.

“Dad, he’s lying!”

Jason grabbed Robert’s arm.

“I SAW EVERYTHING!”

Robert ripped free.

Then crossed the room and slapped Claire across the face.

“You bitch!”

Claire staggered sideways.

Her cheek burned.

She stared at her father.

Not angry yet.

Destroyed.

Behind Robert, Jason watched silently.

Claire looked past them at Emma.

Then everything else stopped mattering.

She grabbed her phone.

“Call 911.”

Robert snapped:

“What?”

“My daughter is unconscious.”

Jason stepped forward.

“She’s fine.”

Claire turned on him.

“You don’t know that.”

Something flickered across Jason’s face.

Too fast.

Then Emma made a weak sound.

Claire dropped beside her again.

“Emma?”

The girl’s eyes opened halfway.

She looked confused.

Then afraid.

Her gaze moved toward Jason.

He smiled.

Small.

Warning.

Emma immediately looked away.

Claire saw it.

That was the first thing that told her the truth would not come from whoever shouted loudest.

The police also photographed the living room.

Not because the couch itself proved who struck Emma.

Because positions mattered.

Emma had landed near the right armrest.

Claire had entered through the hallway on the opposite side of the room.

Jason claimed Claire had hit Emma before he called out.

That would have required Claire to:

enter,

cross the room,

strike Emma,

step back toward the doorway,

and then return when Jason shouted.

Could that have happened?

Physically, yes.

But the timing looked strange.

The home’s front-door sensor showed Claire entered from the garage at 4:52:18 p.m.

Jason’s call to her—

“CLAIRE!”

was captured by the smart speaker at approximately 4:52:29.

Eleven seconds.

The hallway between garage and living room took Claire about nine seconds at a normal pace.

Police did not treat that as conclusive.

People could move faster.

Clocks could drift slightly.

But Jason’s version suddenly had a time problem.

Grace said:

“This is what we want. Not dramatic certainty. Independent friction against his story.”

Claire looked at Emma sleeping in the hospital bed.

For the first time since Robert slapped her, she felt something other than rage.

Ground under her feet.
