Northline Freight fired Darren immediately.
Then issued statement:
rogue employee misconduct.
Jake hated that phrase.
Rogue employee.
Convenient.
The company had ignored:
credential anomalies,
warehouse overwrite patterns,
serial complaints,
conflict disclosures,
and unusual vendor payments.
No evidence senior executives joined Darren’s fraud.
But systems failed.
Jake testified in a regulatory review.
“They want this to be one bad guy.”
A board attorney objected.
Jake continued:
“He was one bad guy. He also needed a warehouse, passwords, approvals, blind spots, and people who stopped asking.”
That became the harder lesson.
Northline paid civil penalties for compliance failures and funded customer remediation.
Several managers lost jobs for oversight failures.
