Chapter 3 - THE HOOK

Emergency crews shut down the bridge.
Recovery took nearly three hours.
Jake and Tyler were removed one at a time using safety lines.
No major injuries.
Bruises.
Shock.
Minor cuts.
Jake stood behind an ambulance blanket while police photographed the SUV.
Detective Mara Lewis arrived because the highway patrol officer noticed the metal device.
It was not a towing hook.
Not factory equipment.
It was a custom retractable snag arm welded beneath the rear frame.
Remote release.
Steel cable.
Replaceable hook head.
Lewis looked at Tyler.
“What is that for?”
Tyler stared at the pavement.
His lawyer had not arrived yet.
He said nothing.
Jake stepped forward.
“You tried to hook my cargo.”
Tyler looked up.
“No.”
Jake laughed.
“You want to try that again?”
Tyler said:
“I was supposed to scare you.”
Everyone went quiet.
Lewis asked:
“Who told you?”
Tyler shut down immediately.
“I need a lawyer.”
Jake stared.
“Scare me?”
Tyler looked at him once.
Then away.
The bridge crash had not been road rage.
Not exactly.
Someone had wanted Jake stopped.
The hook meant someone wanted the cargo too.
Before investigators opened the damaged pallet, Jake kept replaying one detail.
Tyler’s face.
Not the panic at the edge.
The moment after rescue when he looked at Jake’s truck number.
Tyler had known it.
Jake asked Lewis to check whether the SUV had followed him before the bridge.
Traffic cameras did.
The SUV entered Route 47 seven minutes after Jake.
Then slowed at an exit ramp until the truck passed.
Then accelerated.
Not coincidence.
Tyler had been waiting for a specific vehicle.
Jake’s.
That eliminated the last version of the story where a reckless young driver simply improvised something stupid on the road.

The hook, the route, and the timing belonged to one plan.
What nobody knew yet was what the plan was actually protecting.
