Chapter 13 - THE ADJOINING PARCEL
At first, the final abstract looked like meaningless land language.
Then Emily saw the name.
Not Caroline Mercer.
Not Rachel Mercer.
An alias.
Rachel Hale.
The adjoining parcel had once been briefly held under that name.
Peter’s note insisted that this was the part Emily needed to understand if she wanted the oldest truth in the story.
Rachel sat across from her in silence while Emily spread the papers out on the kitchen table.
“Have you ever heard your mother use the name Hale?” Emily asked.
Rachel frowned.
“No.”
Emily checked the date again.
The parcel had been acquired years before Emily’s birth, during the period when Caroline Mercer was secretly helping Helen Voss and privately opposing Thomas Carter’s influence.
Why use an alias?
Why connect it to Rachel?
Why leave the file to Emily only after everything else?
Nora read the abstract and said the same thing Emily was already thinking.
“This isn’t about Willow Creek directly. It’s about whatever bargain Caroline was making on the side.”
Ryan looked at Rachel.
“Do you think your mom was hiding money?”
Rachel shook her head.
“No. If Caroline hid anything, it was never for greed.”
That sounded right.
Too right.
And that meant the final secret was probably not another fraud.
It was probably a protection.
The same night, Emily went back through Caroline Mercer’s old notebooks that Rachel had kept boxed in the attic.
Halfway through one battered journal, she found the line that broke the last sealed door:
If Valerie takes the girl’s future, Rachel will never know why I moved the Hale parcel when I did.
Emily looked up slowly.
Rachel’s face had gone pale.
The Hale parcel.
The alias.
Rachel never know why.
The oldest hidden move in the entire case might not have been about land speculation at all.
It might have been about Rachel herself.

They had been protecting Rachel from something too.
