Chapter 6 - HELEN VOSS

The next day, Emily, Ryan, and Nora dug into old county records connected to Helen Voss, Valerie’s mother.
The result was devastating.
Helen Voss had once owned a major portion of the land that later became Willow Creek.
Before her death, she had placed it into a provisional trust.
For Emily.
Not for Valerie.
Not for the company.
For Emily.
The reason was worse than anyone expected.
Helen believed Valerie was too ambitious, too financially reckless, and too willing to blur legal lines. So she had tied the land to the next generation and made Valerie only a temporary custodial manager.
And Emily’s rights would mature when she turned thirty.
She was twenty-nine.
Now the timing of everything made horrible sense.
The forged signatures.
The rush to close Willow Creek.
The fake vendors.
The pressure on Peter.
The trap in the trunk.
If Emily reached thirty and asked the right questions, the entire fraud could collapse.
At the hospital, Peter regained consciousness long enough to speak clearly.
He confirmed that Valerie had used forged instruments for years to keep Willow Creek financable.
He confirmed that Thomas knew part of it.
And he confirmed the thing Emily most needed:
“There’s garage footage,” Peter said. “Valerie opened your trunk after dinner.”
Before the nurse pushed them out, he whispered one final line:
“If she finds the Voss file, she’ll know Helen knew about Caroline.”
Caroline Mercer.
Rachel’s mother.
The name had now appeared twice in old land records.
That meant the conspiracy was older and wider than Emily had imagined.
And it meant somebody outside the Carter family had helped build the trust from the beginning.
Later that evening, Thomas texted:
COME HOME. ALONE.
I CAN PROVE SHE USED YOUR CAR.
Emily looked at the message, then at Ryan.
“This is either the first honest thing my father has done,” she said, “or the last trap my family has left.”
May you like
Ryan answered immediately.
“So we go,” he said. “And this time we bring witnesses.”
