Chapter 7 - THE GARAGE FOOTAGE

Emily did not go alone.

Nora positioned plainclothes officers nearby while Ryan waited farther down the road.

Thomas met Emily inside the side hall leading to the Carter garage.

A small wall monitor showed the recorded garage feed.

He entered a password and stopped the playback.

Emily watched herself arrive for dinner the night before the traffic stop.

Two minutes after she disappeared into the house, Valerie entered the frame.

She looked around.

Opened Emily’s car.

Popped the trunk.

Leaned inside.

Emily’s breath caught.

Then Thomas appeared in frame.

He said something she could not hear. Valerie answered without visible alarm.

Emily turned on him.

“You saw her tampering with my car.”

“Yes.”

“And you said nothing.”

“I thought she was moving documents,” he said.

Emily laughed once in disbelief.

“So that was acceptable?”

“No.”

“But it wasn’t enough.”

Before he could say more, Nora stepped in and began cloning the feed.

And then Valerie’s voice came from the doorway behind them.

“No,” she said calmly, “it was enough. Thomas was simply too weak to stop it.”

Valerie had returned home early.

She took in the officers, the copied footage, Emily’s expression, and Thomas’s half-confession in one swift look.

Then she did something almost more frightening than denial.

She told the truth in parts.

Yes, she had opened the trunk.

Yes, she had authorized Emily’s car to hold leverage.

Yes, she had planned for the vehicle to be seized before Emily could reach Peter.

But no, she claimed, she had not personally authorized an explosive outcome.

“What I authorized and what frightened men improvised are not identical things,” she said coolly.

It was the kind of defense only a smart villain can give—narrow, precise, and morally rotten.

Nora arrested her.

Evelyn Hart was found in Thomas’s office trying to remove computer backups.

She was arrested too.

Before Valerie was led away, she looked at Emily and said:

“If you keep digging into Helen Voss and Caroline Mercer, you may discover that your father is not the only one who lied to you.”

And that line stayed with Emily long after the police cars left.

May you like

Because Valerie never wasted a sentence.

If she hinted at a deeper lie, there was one.
