Chapter 3 - THE WOMAN WHO DISAPPEARED CORRECTLY
Hannah Price had not vanished.
She lived under her own name in Oregon and worked as a veterinary technician. When detective Mara Singh called, Hannah contacted an attorney before answering questions.
Her first statement damaged Claire's account.
Hannah denied writing a letter. She said Logan had never locked her in a shed or drugged her. Their engagement ended because she stole eighty thousand dollars from a Mercer account and accepted a confidential settlement instead of prosecution.
Logan released the old police complaint, a repayment agreement, and a notarized affidavit bearing Hannah's signature. In it, she described herself as unstable and admitted inventing accusations during the breakup.
The press called Claire's story an imitation.
Logan filed for a protective order, claiming Richard had broken into his property and that father and daughter were trying to extort him with a fabricated letter. Margaret requested charges against Claire for assaulting her.
Richard wanted to confront Hannah. Claire refused.
“She signed what I signed,” Claire said.
Six months earlier, after a neighbor heard shouting, Claire told police her bruises came from falling against a dresser. Logan had stood beside her while she signed the statement. The document now made her look like a proven liar.
“Why didn't you tell me?” Richard asked.
Claire's expression hardened. “I did.”
She reminded him of a Sunday lunch when she said Logan monitored her phone. Richard told her marriage required compromise. When she said she was afraid to make him angry, Richard asked whether stress was making her dramatic.
He remembered every sentence.
“I thought you would say it clearly if you were in danger.”
“I thought you would hear me before I had to.”
Richard had no defense.
Police recovered server records from Claire's interrupted call. The phone had continued buffering audio for twelve seconds after the visible call ended. A male voice said, “Give me the envelope.” A female voice said, “Search her again.”
Logan argued the words lacked context. Margaret said she was searching for pills Claire had taken.
The estate's smart-lock records showed the shed door locked from an exterior keypad at 10:58 p.m. Logan's code was used.
He claimed Claire knew his code and locked it herself to frame him.
Then Detective Singh received an overnight package from Oregon.
