Margaret did not deny the purchase.

She said she used the sleep aid herself and kept it in the guest bathroom. Claire could have taken it voluntarily. The receipt proved only that Margaret bought a common medication.

Her lawyer presented something more damaging: text messages in which Claire asked Margaret for “something to make my mind stop” during a panic attack two months earlier.

Claire remembered the exchange. Margaret had given her herbal tea, not pills. But the message allowed the defense to suggest a habit of seeking sedation.

Hannah recognized the same method. Margaret portrayed herself as the gentle woman who calmed the chaos her son supposedly endured. She offered tea, sympathy, and confidential help. Later, those moments became evidence that Logan's partner was unstable.

“Why protect him?” Claire asked Margaret during a deposition.

Margaret's answer was not the simple devotion everyone expected.

When Logan was a child, his father punished him by locking him in the shed. Margaret said she tried to intervene and was beaten. After her husband died, she told herself Logan's later use of isolation was controlled, temporary, and safer than open violence.

“You knew what that room meant,” Claire said.

“I knew he would not leave you there long.”

“You heard my father at the door and still tried to stop him.”

Margaret looked away.

Her history explained the language of “family matter.” It did not excuse buying medication, helping restrain Claire, or supporting false accounts.

Police searched old Mercer family records and found pediatric notes documenting injuries Logan suffered as a boy. Under another loose floorboard in the shed, investigators found words scratched into the wood decades earlier:

Mom knows. Mom always knows.

Logan's lawyer argued the discovery showed he was traumatized, not criminal. Prosecutors agreed childhood abuse mattered for treatment and sentencing. It did not authorize repetition.

Financial records revealed Margaret had paid Hannah annually through a trust account, even after the original settlement was complete. Margaret called the payments compassion. Hannah called them the price of silence.

One payment was made three days after Claire and Logan became engaged.
