Chapter 7 - THE FATHER WHO WANTED A SIMPLE ENEMY

Richard wanted Logan arrested immediately.

Detective Singh warned him that rage could help the defense. Logan had already portrayed Richard as an aggressive father manipulating Claire. Any confrontation would strengthen that claim.

Richard followed the order to stay away, but he struggled with a harder limitation: Claire did not want him making decisions for her.

He tried to choose her lawyer. She kept her own. He offered to move her into his house. She chose a confidential apartment through an advocacy program. He wanted daily updates. She sometimes turned off her phone.

“I'm trying to protect you,” he said.

“Then believe me when I tell you what protection I need.”

The words forced him to see how easily love could imitate control when fear was in charge.

Logan filed for divorce and invoked a prenuptial clause denying support if Claire made knowingly false criminal accusations. The clause was not automatically invalid. Claire's old police statement gave him a basis to argue she knew her current account was false.

He also sued Hannah for violating the settlement and accused the two women of coordinating stories for money.

Hannah's attorney found an exception allowing disclosure when compelled by subpoena. She had given her storage key voluntarily before the subpoena, creating a genuine contract dispute. The court refused to take her home but froze part of the old settlement until trial.

Hannah nearly withdrew.

Claire called her, not to demand courage, but to say she would continue even if Hannah could not.

“I left that letter because I wanted the next woman to do what I couldn't,” Hannah said.

“You got out,” Claire answered. “That was something.”

The criminal investigation gained independent evidence from the estate's former groundskeeper. Nine years earlier, he saw Margaret replace a damaged shed hasp the morning after Hannah left. Months before Claire's attack, Logan asked him to reconnect the exterior keypad and not link it to the main household dashboard.

Work invoices corroborated both statements.

Then the hospital evidence custodian admitted a serious error. Claire's wet clothing bag had remained unsealed for eleven minutes during emergency intake. A paramedic, two nurses, and Richard were in the area.

The missing original letter could have been removed by anyone with access.

Logan's attorney accused Richard of taking it and sending the carbon copy to Hannah so she could fabricate matching evidence.

For the first time, physical evidence placed Richard inside the chain of suspicion.
