Chapter 2 - RUTH SAID THE ONE THING THAT DESTROYED HER OWN LIE

Marcus did not move.

For several seconds, nobody did.

Then he said:

“Your grandchild?”

Ruth closed her eyes.

Maya stared at the back of her cardigan.

“Ruth.”

The older woman turned slowly.

Maya’s face was white.

“What did you tell him?”

Ruth’s mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Marcus stepped around her.

“You said she admitted it.”

Maya looked at him.

“Admitted what?”

Marcus pointed at Ruth.

“She said you told her the baby could be Daniel’s.”

Maya went completely still.

Daniel Price.

Her former residency partner.

A man she had not dated.

Had never kissed.

Had never even been alone with outside work conferences attended by dozens of people.

Maya looked at Ruth.

“You told him that?”

Ruth’s voice came out thin.

“Yes.”

Marcus laughed in disbelief.

“So now you’re changing your story?”

Ruth turned on him.

“There was no story to change.”

He stared.

Maya stopped breathing.

Ruth forced herself to say it.

“I lied.”

Marcus’s face emptied.

Maya’s knees gave out.

She grabbed the kitchen counter.

“You what?”

Ruth looked at her.

“I lied.”

The second time sounded worse.

Marcus’s voice rose.

“Why?”

Ruth did not answer him.

Maya did.

“Because she wanted me gone.”

Ruth looked down.

That was answer enough.

Marcus stepped backward as if someone had hit him.

“You told me my wife cheated.”

“Yes.”

“You told me the baby wasn’t mine.”

“Yes.”

“You said she confessed.”

“Yes.”

Each word stripped something away.

Marcus’s anger.

Then certainty.

Then dignity.

Maya looked at him and realized something almost unbearable.

He had believed all of it immediately.

Not after proof.

Not after a conversation.

Immediately.

The lie was Ruth’s.

The cruelty after it belonged to Marcus.
