Chapter 9 - MAYA WENT INTO LABOR WITHOUT MARCUS IN THE ROOM

At thirty-eight weeks, Maya’s water broke at 4:12 a.m.
She called her sister.
Then the hospital.
Then, after twenty minutes, Marcus.
He arrived before delivery.
Maya did not allow him in the room.
That broke him.
But he did not argue.
He sat outside.
For seven hours.
Ruth came once.
Marcus stopped her at the elevator.
“Not today.”
She looked at him.
“That’s my grandchild.”
“It’s Maya’s labor.”
Ruth stared.
Then nodded.
Slowly.
She left.
At 12:46 p.m., Maya delivered a healthy baby girl.
Lila.
Marcus saw her forty minutes later.
A nurse brought him in after Maya agreed.
He stood beside the bassinet and cried.
Maya watched.
Then said:
“You can love her.”
He looked at her.
“I do.”
“You can be her father.”
His face tightened.
“And your husband?”
Maya looked away.
“I don’t know.”
That was honest.
No punishment.
May you like
No promise.
Just uncertainty finally given the respect it deserved.
