Chapter 10 - THE SUPERMARKET CASE
The physical assault was separate from the trust dispute.
Police reviewed checkout security footage and witness statements.
Margaret had:
mild cheek redness,
arm soreness,
no fracture,
no serious injury.
Stephanie had no prior criminal record.
Prosecutors pursued a proportional assault case involving an older victim.
Stephanie’s attorney sought diversion.
Margaret did not object if conditions included:
no physical contact,
anger intervention,
and compliance with protective boundaries.
Then Stephanie asked for family mediation before plea.
Margaret agreed once.
Stephanie began:
“I’m sorry I slapped you.”
Margaret waited.
“I was under pressure.”
Still waiting.
“You embarrassed me.”
Margaret raised one eyebrow.
Stephanie stopped.
Then corrected herself.
“I felt embarrassed.”
Better.
“That was mine.”
Better again.
Margaret said:
“You slapped me because I would not buy your groceries.”
“Yes.”
“Say the rest.”
Stephanie’s eyes filled.
“I thought you would give in.”
There.
“And why?”
Stephanie looked down.
“Because you always did.”
Margaret felt grief more than triumph.
A habit takes two people to become predictable.
One demands.
One yields.
That did not make the violence mutual.
It did explain the history.
Then Stephanie said:
“I thought no meant later.”
