Chapter 12 - MARGARET MOVES

Everyone assumed Margaret would return triumphantly to Whitaker House.

She did not.

After six weeks in a hotel and then a short-term apartment, she decided to move into a two-bedroom condo near Forsyth Park.

She could walk to:

pharmacy,

coffee,

church,

and her friend Barbara’s apartment.

Daniel asked:

“Are you giving up your residence right?”

“No.”

Good.

She retained it.

But choice mattered.

Stephanie was stunned.

“You froze everything because you wanted the house.”

Margaret almost smiled.

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because I wanted to stop paying for the privilege of being insulted in it.”

That ended the argument.

Margaret furnished the condo with things from storage.

Henry’s reading chair.

Her blue dishes.

A small dining table.

The red wallet went in the kitchen drawer.

Not as symbol.

She no longer needed it in every room.

Then she filled her prescription.

Paid from her own account.

No stress.

No daughter asking for champagne.

She sat on the balcony afterward and realized something uncomfortable.

The trust had made her financially powerful.

It had not made her emotionally free.

She had possessed the legal ability to stop support for years.

What she lacked was permission from herself.

That could not be drafted by an attorney.
