The farmhouse sold four months later.
$1.67 million.
A family with two children bought it.
They loved the wide halls and accessible bathroom.
Lily liked that.
Garrett received the court-approved reimbursement amount.
The trust retained the rest.
Cole Agricultural Supply later entered restructuring.
Not Lily’s problem.
Diane moved permanently into a one-bedroom apartment near a bus line.
Her first visit to Lily’s townhouse was awkward.
She brought groceries.
Lily checked the bags.
“No medications?”
Diane almost laughed.
“No.”
“No spare key requests?”
“No.”
“No comments about my chair battery?”
Diane smiled sadly.
“I’m trying.”
That was enough for one afternoon.
Then Ava met with Rachel to revise the power of attorney.
Emergency powers were no longer necessary.
Ava expected Lily to keep everything in place.
Instead, Lily narrowed it.
Health-care backup and emergency access only.
No routine financial authority.
Ava felt strange.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“You don’t trust me?”
Lily looked at her.
“I trust you enough not to need you in everything.”
That stopped Ava.
Protection could become identity too.
Ava had spent the entire case as the sister who arrived.
Now she had to learn how to leave rooms Lily could manage herself.
“Okay,” Ava said.
Lily smiled.
“Good answer.”
Then the trust appointed a permanent independent fiduciary.
Lily retained direct decision rights with accommodations.
She joined a peer advisory group for disabled trust beneficiaries.
Her first complaint was that every legal document used the phrase protected person too often.
Rachel laughed.
“Lawyers love nouns.”
Lily said:
“I prefer person.”
Then Diane delivered one final box from the farmhouse.
Inside:
Samuel’s letters.
Old family photographs.
Lily’s first wheelchair gloves.
A small camera from the kitchen.
The hidden lens.
Lily held it in her hand for a long time.
Then said:
“I don’t want this in my new house.”
