Chapter 4 - THE CAMERA UNDER THE CABINET

The kitchen video was ugly.

Not cinematic.

No perfect angle.

No clean confession.

It showed Lily entering the kitchen in her wheelchair.

Garrett standing near the sink.

They argued.

Lily said:

“I’m not signing anything.”

Garrett answered:

“You don’t understand what we’ve spent on you.”

Lily tried to move toward the counter where her phone rested.

Garrett stepped in front of her.

“Move.”

“No.”

She reached around him.

He grabbed the wheelchair handle and yanked it backward.

Lily shouted.

The front caster struck the cabinet.

Then Garrett shoved the chair sideways.

Hard.

The wheel twisted.

Lily fell.

Her shoulder struck the refrigerator.

Her face hit the floor.

Diane stood three feet away.

She did not intervene.

Garrett picked up Lily’s phone.

Then the video ended when the camera angle shifted.

Ruiz watched it twice.

“This is strong.”

Ava asked:

“Strong enough for what?”

“Strong enough to investigate assault and coercive conduct.”

“Arrest?”

“Maybe. But we don’t promise timing.”

Garrett’s attorney attacked quickly.

The camera was hidden and Lily had installed surveillance without telling the household.

Rachel answered that the camera covered a shared kitchen area within property controlled by Lily’s trust and was installed after documented concerns.

Still, admissibility would be litigated.

Then Garrett produced a second video.

Recorded from his own phone two weeks earlier.

Lily screaming:

“I hate this house. I hate both of you. I’ll make sure you get nothing.”

Ava looked at her sister.

Lily closed her eyes.

“I said it.”

Garrett’s attorney argued motive.

Lily wanted Garrett and Diane gone.

She had created surveillance to build a case.

She had appointed Ava secretly.

The storm-night confrontation was part of a planned takeover.

The theory was ugly.

Also coherent enough to require answers.

Then Ruiz asked:

“Why three squeezes?”

Lily looked at Ava.

“Because Garrett listens when people talk.”

Months earlier, after Lily began suspecting her phone was being checked, she and Ava created a silent emergency signal.

One squeeze meant okay.

Two meant stay.

Three meant: evidence is recording—call Ruiz.

Ruiz nodded.

“You planned well.”

Lily looked down.

“I planned because nobody believed me.”

Then Ava asked the question that had been bothering her.

“How did you get connected to the district attorney’s office in the first place?”

Rachel answered.

Because this was not the first video.

May you like

She opened a laptop.

“There are seven more.”
