Chapter 15 - ONE SQUEEZE

Six months after the storm, Lily’s townhouse did not look like a recovery space.

It looked lived in.

Books, uneven plants, a scratched kitchen table, and a wheelchair charger mounted exactly where Lily wanted it.

No hidden cameras.

No dependency file.

No Garrett.

On the wall beneath the cabinet where a camera might once have gone, Lily hung a framed card.

Samuel’s handwriting:

Support is not ownership.

Help must never become leverage.

Ava stood beside her.

“You sure you want that in the kitchen?”

“Yes.”

“Very subtle.”

“I’ve had enough subtle.”

They laughed.

Then Diane arrived.

She rang the bell.

Did not use a key.

That mattered.

Lily opened the door.

Diane held a pie.

“Store-bought,” she said quickly.

“Good.”

“No emotional symbolism.”

“Even better.”

Their relationship was not fixed.

It was bounded.

Sometimes that was the only honest beginning.

Later, after Diane left, Ava and Lily sat by the window while rain began softly outside.

Not a storm.

Just weather.

Ava looked at her sister.

“Do we keep the signal?”

Lily frowned.

“What signal?”

“The squeezes.”

Recognition crossed her face.

Three squeezes.

Don’t argue.

Don’t warn them.

The camera is recording.

For months, those three squeezes had meant fear disciplined into strategy.

Lily reached for Ava’s hand.

Then squeezed once.

Ava waited.

No second squeeze.

No third.

Lily smiled.

“One means?”

“I don’t know.”

“I can say it out loud now.”

Ava felt her eyes sting.

“Say what?”

Lily looked around her home.

Then at her sister.

“I’m okay.”

Outside, rain moved down the glass.

Inside, no one was listening through a wall.

No one controlled the charger.

No one tracked missed appointments.

No one turned help into debt.

The farmhouse was gone.

Garrett’s case was over.

The trust had rules that belonged to Lily rather than to people claiming to protect her.

Ava squeezed her hand once in return.

Not a code.

May you like

Just an answer.

And for the first time, neither sister needed silence to understand the other.
