Chapter 9 - ETHAN'S FAILURE

Ethan wanted to say:

“I never stopped looking.”

Technically true.

Emotionally incomplete.

For the first year, he called detectives constantly.

Paid a private investigator.

Followed leads.

Then the emails changed him.

His investigator said:

“If she wants distance, there are legal limits.”

A therapist told him:

“You may have to build a life without an answer.”

Margaret said:

“Emily needs one parent who is present.”

Ethan eventually stopped active searching.

He hated himself for that now.

Claire told him from the hospital:

“You believed the emails.”

“I didn’t at first.”

“But eventually.”

“Yes.”

She looked away.

Ethan wanted to explain:

grief,

money,

false leads,

Emily waking at night asking if Mom was dead.

Instead he said:

“Yes.”

Then:

“I should have questioned why the messages never sounded like you.”

Claire answered:

“You did.”

“For a while.”

Silence.

Neither person got a clean innocence.

Claire’s first conversation with Ethan about Margaret lasted seventeen minutes.

Then Claire stopped.

“I’m tired.”

Ethan wanted answers.

Four years of them.

He nearly kept asking.

Then saw her face.

“Okay.”

That word was difficult.

He had waited four years.

She had been found hours ago.

His urgency did not become her obligation.

The detective would interview her later.

The trust attorney later.

Doctors later.

Ethan had to learn that reunion did not make him first in every queue.
