Margaret initially denied sending the emails.
Then evidence accumulated.
Hospital visitor logs.
Travel receipts.
Account metadata.
Trust records.
The ledger Claire recovered.
Margaret finally confessed in a recorded interview with counsel present.
“I thought Claire would destroy the family.”
The detective asked:
“How?”
“She would tell Ethan about the trust.”
“Was the money stolen?”
Margaret bristled.
“I intended it for Emily.”
“Through your condo?”
“It was an investment.”
“Authorized?”
Silence.
The trust attorney later concluded several transactions violated fiduciary duties.
Not every dollar was criminal theft.
Some expenses were arguably related to future educational planning.
Others were self-dealing and had to be repaid.
Margaret had transformed a financial dispute into years of family destruction because she was terrified of losing status and control.
The original sin was not murder.
