Chapter 14 - ROBERT AND THE DEED
Robert kept the original certified deed copy for years.
Lauren teased him about it.
“You know records are digital now.”
Robert said:
“Paper survives passwords.”
After the incident, Lauren asked:
“Why did you bring the briefcase?”
“I thought Ethan might argue.”
“You expected that?”
“I expected stupidity.”
She laughed.
Then stopped.
“Dad, did you ever think I shouldn’t let him put money into the house?”
“Yes.”
Lauren stared.
“You never said.”
“You were married.”
“That’s your excuse?”
“It was my boundary.”
She considered.
Robert had given her purchase money.
Not authority over her marriage.
He did not want to become the father who used a gift to control adult decisions.
That restraint had costs too.
There is no perfect amount of family involvement.
Only choices.
Robert’s best act that day was not producing the deed.
The county recorder already knew the owner.
His best act was arriving when Lauren asked for help.
Robert never asked Lauren to repay the $70,000 he gave her toward the original purchase.
The gift letter from the mortgage file confirmed it was a gift.
No lien.
No side agreement.
No hidden ownership.
That mattered because Ethan briefly suggested:
“Maybe your father owns it.”
Robert laughed.
“No.”
Then handed over the gift letter too.
He had no secret stake.
He did not arrive to seize the property for the Vance family.
