Chapter 9 - THE POLICE REPORT

Robert called police.

Lauren did not want to.

At first.

“I just want them gone.”

Robert answered:

“They hit you with luggage.”

“It’s over.”

“That does not mean it didn’t happen.”

Officers documented:

redness on Lauren’s cheek,

shoulder tenderness,

the suitcase position,

Robert’s observations,

and security-camera footage from the entry hall.

Eleanor claimed:

“I was removing her belongings.”

The footage showed her swing the suitcase into Lauren.

Ethan said:

“I pushed the bag toward her.”

The footage supported that too.

No catastrophic injuries.

No hospitalization.

Lauren later had bruising.

The case did not become attempted murder.

Both Ethan and Eleanor faced misdemeanor assault-related charges.

Eleanor was also formally removed from the property.

Ethan’s occupancy deadline had expired.

The house returned to Lauren’s possession.

Lauren’s first night back in the house felt wrong.

Not unsafe.

Wrong.

Eleanor’s coffee machine still sat on the counter.

Ethan’s shaving cream was still in the bathroom.

One of his jackets hung behind the laundry-room door.

The court order allowed him to retrieve overlooked personal items later through counsel.

Lauren did not throw anything away.

She boxed them.

Labeled each box.

Photographed contents.

Sent the inventory to her attorney.

That process felt absurdly formal for objects she had once folded beside her own clothes.

But formality was useful now.

It prevented:

he said,

she said,

missing items,

new accusations.

Trust had been replaced by chain of custody.

Sad.

Necessary.

Lauren also discovered Eleanor had moved several of her family photographs into the basement.

Nothing destroyed.

Nothing stolen.

Just relocated.

A picture of Lauren and Robert at her college graduation.

Her mother’s framed recipe card.

A photo from the day Lauren bought the house.

Eleanor said later:

“I was making space for Ethan to move forward.”

Lauren answered:

“In my house?”

Silence.

The act was small compared with assault.

Still revealing.

Eleanor had been editing the visual evidence of Lauren’s belonging before attempting to edit the legal story too.

Lawfully.

May you like

Boringly.

Completely.
