Chapter 12 - THE BABY SHOWER WITHOUT RYAN

At thirty-two weeks, Claire’s friends held a small baby shower.

No Ryan.

No Bennetts except Diane and, at Claire’s invitation, Brooke.

People asked whether that felt strange.

It did.

Everything felt strange.

Pregnancy was supposed to turn toward nesting.

Claire’s had turned toward depositions, medical documentation, forensic files, and security plans.

Still, for three hours, there were cupcakes.

Tiny socks.

Bad games.

Laughter.

Claire remembered she was carrying a person, not just evidence of surviving one.

Diane gave her a knitted blanket.

Cream-colored.

Claire touched it carefully.

“I made it.”

“You knit?”

“I used to.”

Before Grant.

The sentence went unspoken.

Brooke gave Claire a baby monitor.

Then immediately said:

“It’s not connected to any Bennett account.”

Everyone laughed.

Even Claire.

That laugh mattered.

Later, when guests left, Diane stayed.

She placed a folder on the table.

“What now?” Claire asked.

“My trust.”

Diane had met independent counsel.

She revoked Grant’s discretionary authority.

Moved management to a corporate trustee.

Separated her assets from Bennett Capital guarantees.

Grant called it abandonment.

Diane called it paperwork.

Claire smiled.

“Good.”

Then Diane said:

“I’m filing for divorce.”

Claire stopped.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“Because of New Year’s Eve?”

“Because New Year’s Eve made me see twenty years.”

Claire understood.

Diane continued.

“I kept thinking if I was calmer, he would stop needing control.”

Claire looked at her.

“Same.”

They sat quietly.

Two women from different generations, both educated, capable, financially literate.

Both manipulated partly because they believed competence should have protected them.

It didn’t.

Awareness came later.

That did not make it less valid.
