Chapter 2 - THE ELEVATOR

Claire did not announce that she was leaving.
She simply walked.
Ryan moved after her.
Diane finally stood.
“Ryan, don’t.”
He ignored his mother.
“Claire.”
She kept moving.
“Claire!”
He reached for her shoulder.
She spun so quickly that he stopped.
“Touch me again and I call 911 before you finish blinking.”
He stared.
Grant laughed from behind them.
“You think photographs make you powerful?”
Claire looked at him.
“No.”
She raised the phone slightly.
“They make you documented.”
That shut him up.
For three seconds.
Then Grant said:
“You walk out, you understand what you’re doing to Ryan.”
Claire nearly smiled.
Not what Ryan had done to her.
What she was doing to Ryan.
The Bennett family grammar.
She pressed the elevator button.
Brooke stood near the dining room.
“What about the agreement?”
Claire looked back.
“You still care about the agreement?”
Brooke’s face flushed.
“It’s not what I mean.”
“It is exactly what you mean.”
The elevator opened.
Claire stepped inside.
Ryan followed to the threshold.
“You are not leaving like this.”
“Watch me.”
“You’re hysterical.”
Claire almost laughed.
“I took photographs.”
“That proves my point.”
“No, Ryan. It proves yours is stupid.”
The doors began to close.
He stopped them with one hand.
“Claire, listen to me.”
She held up the phone.
“I am listening. Carefully.”
His eyes shifted toward the security camera inside the elevator.
He noticed it.
Good.
His voice softened instantly.
“Please come back inside.”
Claire felt something cold move through her.
Performance.
He knew how to sound gentle when an objective witness existed.
She looked directly at the camera too.
“My husband restrained both my wrists while his father pressed a lit cigarette against my maternity dress.”
Ryan’s face went white.
“Claire—”
“I am six months pregnant. I am leaving because I do not feel safe.”
He removed his hand from the door.
The elevator closed.
Claire stood alone.
Then her knees buckled.
She caught the handrail.
Her breathing broke.
“Baby.”
She touched her belly.
Movement.
Another kick.
Claire sobbed.
The elevator reached the garage.
She called 911.
Then her obstetrician.
Then a woman named Maya Chen.
Maya had been Claire’s attorney long before she was her friend.
“What happened?”
Claire tried to answer.
Nothing came out.
Maya’s tone changed instantly.
“Claire. Are you in danger?”
“I’m in the garage.”
“Get in the car and lock it.”
“I’m pregnant.”
“I know.”
“They—”
Her voice cracked.
“Ryan held me.”
Maya went silent.
“And Grant burned my dress.”
The silence became different.
“Where?”
“My stomach.”
“Are you injured?”
“I don’t know.”
“Do not drive.”
Claire leaned against the car.
“I called 911.”
“Good.”
“Maya.”
“Yes?”
“They needed me to sign something before midnight.”
A pause.
“What?”
“I don’t know exactly.”
“Then we’re going to find out.”
Police arrived first.
Paramedics second.
Claire was transported to St. Joseph’s Medical Center.
Her baby’s heartbeat was steady.
The burn was superficial.
The wrist marks were photographed.
Claire cried when the obstetrician said the baby appeared fine.
She cried harder because relief hurt.
At 11:48 p.m., Maya arrived at the hospital.
No makeup.
Black coat thrown over pajamas.
Legal pad in hand.
“What did they want you to sign?”
Claire looked at her.
“A family guarantee. Ryan said it was routine.”
“Guarantee for what?”
“He wouldn’t say.”
“Did you see a lender name?”
Claire thought.
Then remembered the footer.
“FrontRange Commercial Bank.”
Maya’s face changed.
“Claire.”
“What?”
“Bennett Capital has a refinancing deadline tonight.”
Claire went still.
“How do you know?”
“I represented a lender on one of their subsidiaries last year.”
“What happens at midnight?”
Maya sat down.
“If they don’t cure a collateral deficiency, a major credit line can be called.”
Claire stared.
“And my signature cures it?”
“I don’t know.”
Her phone buzzed.
A message from Ryan.
COME HOME. WE CAN FIX THIS.
Another.
DAD DIDN’T MEAN TO HURT YOU.
Then:
YOU ARE PUTTING HUNDREDS OF JOBS AT RISK.
Claire showed Maya.
Maya read it once.
Then said:
“Do not reply.”
May you like
At 12:03 a.m., Ryan sent one final message.
TOO LATE.
