Chapter 16 - RYAN MET HIS DAUGHTER

Ryan met Grace six weeks later.

Supervised.

Court-approved.

Claire was not required to attend.

She did anyway.

Not alone.

Maya nearby.

A professional supervisor in the room.

Ryan looked smaller without family authority around him.

He saw Grace and began crying.

Claire believed the tears.

That complicated nothing.

People can love and still be unsafe.

Ryan held the baby carefully.

For ten minutes, he barely spoke.

Then:

“She has your nose.”

Claire nodded.

“She has your hair.”

Maybe.

Too early.

Ryan looked at Claire.

“I’m sorry.”

She waited.

“For what?”

His eyes closed.

“For that night.”

Specific enough to start.

“What part?”

He swallowed.

“Holding you.”

“And?”

“Not stopping Dad.”

“And?”

He looked down.

“Lying about the guarantee.”

Claire felt something loosen.

Not forgiveness.

Accuracy.

Ryan whispered:

“I thought if I lost the company, I lost everything.”

“You almost lost everything because you treated me like collateral.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

He looked at Grace.

“I’m learning.”

That was the only acceptable answer.

Not changed.

Learning.

He began therapy.

Court-mandated at first.

Then voluntary.

His access to Grace expanded slowly over years, not weeks.

May you like

Claire did not make his rehabilitation her project.

That mattered.
