Chapter 15 - THE DELIVERY PLAN

As Claire approached thirty-six weeks, her obstetrician asked the question she had been dreading.

“Who is your support person?”

Not Ryan.

The answer was obvious.

Still painful.

Claire chose Maya’s sister, Natalie, a labor-and-delivery nurse Claire had known for years, plus her own cousin Emma.

Diane asked whether she should come.

Claire said no.

Not because she blamed Diane.

Because childbirth was not the place to repair complicated family relationships.

Diane accepted it.

That acceptance mattered.

Ryan petitioned for hospital notification when labor began.

The request was denied.

He would be notified of birth through counsel as appropriate.

He called it cruel.

Claire called it safe.

At thirty-eight weeks, labor began at 2:13 a.m.

Not dramatic.

A tightening.

Then another.

Claire stood in her kitchen holding a glass of water.

For one second, New Year’s Eve flashed through her.

Pain near her belly.

Ryan behind her.

Grant’s cigarette.

She froze.

Then the baby moved.

Different memory.

Different meaning.

Claire breathed.

“Okay.”

She called Natalie.

Hospital security used a private registration protocol.

No Bennetts entered.

Twelve hours later, Claire gave birth to a healthy daughter.

Seven pounds, two ounces.

She named her Grace.

Not because the pregnancy had been graceful.

Because Claire wanted the word returned to its proper meaning.

Not silence.

Not endurance.

Not accommodation.

Grace as room to live without earning safety.

Claire held her daughter and cried.

Then she asked the nurse to take a photograph.

Not evidence.

May you like

A memory.

That distinction mattered more than she expected.
