Chapter 12 - SARAH'S FAILURE
Sarah had her own guilt.
She had seen signs.
Not enough to prove abuse.
Enough to worry.
She kept trying to persuade Robert privately.
Why?
Because Clara loved him.
Because Noah loved him.
Because Sarah feared that reporting would destroy the family.
The investigator asked:
“What did you think would happen if you called sooner?”
Sarah answered:
“He’d stop letting me see Noah.”
“And then?”
“I don’t know.”
That was the truth.
Sarah had confused access with effectiveness.
Staying close to Noah mattered.
But staying close while never escalating concerns had limits.
She did not cause Robert’s violence.
Still, she had to admit:
I waited because I wanted a version of this where nobody hated me.
There was no such version.
The court did not require Sarah to become a supervisor or substitute parent.
That boundary helped everyone.
Professional supervisors handled visits.
Therapists handled treatment.
Teachers handled school.
Sarah remained what she had always been:
Sarah.
Family friend.
Emergency contact.
Someone Noah trusted.
No heroic promotion.
