Chapter 5 - THE FIRST EMAIL
Sarah had the emails because Clara had originally listed her as an emergency contact.
After Clara died, Robert forgot to remove her from an old shared family account.
Preschool messages sometimes forwarded there.
The first important one said:
Noah became extremely distressed during cleanup transition today. He covered his ears and cried for approximately twelve minutes. We reduced verbal directions and used a picture schedule. He recovered more quickly.
Sarah read it.
Then another.
Noah did better today when warned five minutes before transition.
Another:
Please consider early-intervention referral. We are not concerned about intelligence. We are concerned that sensory overload and limited expressive language may make transitions harder.
Sarah called Robert.
He said:
“They diagnose every kid now.”
“They’re not diagnosing him.”
“They’re building a case.”
“For what?”

Robert had no answer.
He simply hated the word referral.
