Chapter 2 - MARGARET WAS NEVER DEAD

Margaret did not answer immediately.
Her lips moved.
No sound came.
Evelyn reached down.
“Mom?”
Margaret’s eyes found hers.
Recognition.
Then fear.
Real fear.
Adrian moved.
Evelyn spun toward him.
“Don’t.”
Her voice was different now.
He stopped.
Vanessa whispered:
“This wasn’t supposed to happen.”
Evelyn looked at her.
“What wasn’t?”
Vanessa said nothing.
Adrian recovered first.
“Evelyn, listen to me.”
She laughed once.
A broken sound.
“You drugged me and put me in a coffin.”
“You don’t understand.”
“My mother is alive.”
Adrian looked toward Margaret.
For the first time, genuine panic broke through his face.
That told Evelyn more than any confession.
He had not expected Margaret to wake.
A siren sounded somewhere in the building.
The coffin’s violent movement had triggered an emergency sensor near the chamber rails.
A crematory employee shouted from the corridor.
Adrian grabbed Vanessa’s wrist.
“We’re leaving.”
Evelyn lunged toward him.
“You’re not going anywhere.”
He shoved her back.
Not enough to knock her down.
Enough to buy two seconds.
He and Vanessa ran.
Evelyn started after them.
Margaret made a sound.
A tiny whimper.
Evelyn stopped.
Her mother mattered more.
She turned back.
“Stay with me.”
Margaret’s fingers closed weakly around hers.
Then the crematory doors burst open.
Two employees entered.
One dropped his clipboard.
“Oh my God.”
Evelyn looked at them.
“Call 911.”
The ambulance arrived in six minutes.
At the hospital, doctors found sedatives in both women.
Different doses.
Margaret had been heavily sedated, dehydrated, and medically fragile—but alive.
Evelyn had been given a shorter-acting sedative.
Enough to make her unconscious.
Not enough to kill her.
That distinction chilled Detective Mara Chen.
“Someone wanted you asleep,” Mara said.
Evelyn sat beside Margaret’s hospital bed.
“Inside a coffin.”
“Yes.”
May you like
Mara looked at her.
“And someone wanted your mother mistaken for dead.”
