Chapter 5 - VANESSA WAS NOT JUST THE MISTRESS
Vanessa Hale was found forty-eight hours later.
Not with Adrian.
At a motel outside Indianapolis.
She surrendered through an attorney.
Her first statement shocked Evelyn.
“I thought Margaret was dead.”
Mara did not react.
“You helped move the coffin.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Evelyn was inside.”
Vanessa started crying.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Adrian told me Evelyn was going to expose us.”
“Expose what?”
Vanessa looked at her attorney.
Then answered.
“The transfers.”
Over eighteen months, Adrian had moved money from Evelyn and Margaret’s shared household accounts into three consulting companies.
Not the trust.
He could not access that.
But enough other money.
$680,000.
Vanessa helped create invoices.
Some for real services.
Some not.
The affair began afterward.
Or maybe during.
Vanessa admitted she knew Adrian planned to sedate Evelyn.
She claimed he told her the goal was to stage a breakdown.
Make Evelyn miss Margaret’s cremation.
Then claim grief had made her unstable.
She did not know he intended to put Evelyn inside the coffin until they reached the crematory.
Mara asked:
“And when you knew?”
Vanessa cried.
“I stayed.”
That mattered.
