Chapter 4 - WHY MARGARET HAD TO DISAPPEAR
Margaret woke fully on the second day.
Her first clear sentence was:
“Don’t let Adrian touch the trust.”
Evelyn froze.
“What trust?”
Margaret looked at her.
“The Halstead Trust.”
Evelyn had heard the name once.
Her maternal grandfather’s estate.
She believed it had been dissolved years ago.
It had not.
Margaret controlled a private family trust worth approximately $42 million.
Real estate.
Municipal bonds.
Private investments.
Evelyn was the successor beneficiary.
Adrian was not.
But marriage gave him potential indirect access if Evelyn inherited and commingled assets.
Margaret had changed the trust three weeks earlier.
New structure:
Upon Margaret’s death, Evelyn would receive distributions through an independent trustee.
No spouse control.
No joint title.
No automatic marital transfer.
Adrian found out.
How?
Margaret suspected Vanessa.
Vanessa worked as a paralegal at the estate law firm before becoming Adrian’s “business consultant.”
Evelyn stared.
“She had access to Mom’s files?”
“Enough.”
Margaret continued.
She confronted Adrian.
He denied everything.
Then two nights later, Margaret drank tea at Evelyn’s house.
After that:
nothing.
She remembered waking once.
Darkness.
Voices.
Adrian saying:
“Once the cremation is done, nobody can reopen this.”
Then sleep again.
Evelyn’s skin went cold.
