Chapter 1 - THE PIT

Rachel Carter was already buried to her shoulders when the backyard gate opened.

Loose soil pressed around her torso without covering her face or neck, but the weight was enough to make every breath feel deliberate.

Her cream maternity dress was dirty.

Her hair was full of dust.

Her pregnant belly was protected below the loose soil, but she was exhausted, terrified, and unable to pull herself free.

Daniel stood above her with a shovel.

His cousins, Aaron and Luke, stood several feet away.

“Please! Stop! I’m pregnant!”

Daniel crouched.

“Then start obeying me.”

Rachel cried.

“I told you I won’t sign it!”

“That is the problem.”

Aaron scooped another load of loose soil and threw it beside Rachel’s shoulder.

Luke laughed nervously.

Rachel turned her face away.

“Please… don’t do this…”

Daniel lifted his shovel.

“Ready to learn your lesson?”

Then the gate creaked.

Everyone froze.

A dark figure stepped into the yard.

Daniel dropped the shovel.

“Who the hell are you?”

The figure kept walking.

Then a woman’s voice answered:

“Rebecca Sloan.”

Daniel’s face changed.

Rachel knew the name.

She had never met Rebecca.

But she had emailed her that morning.

Rebecca was a licensed environmental consultant recommended by the city’s residential permitting office.

Rachel had sent her photographs of broken tile, plaster, black roofing fragments, and old insulation that appeared after Daniel dug a trench for a new patio footing.

Rebecca was supposed to come the next day.

Not tonight.

She looked from Daniel to Rachel.

Then to the pit.

Her expression hardened.

“I came early because your wife sent me another photo.”

Daniel looked at Rachel.

“What photo?”

Rebecca pulled out her phone.

A picture taken that afternoon.

The base of the pit.

Half-covered by soil.

A square of faded yellow plastic with black lettering.

CARTER OUTDOOR & MASONRY — DEMOLITION LOAD 17.

Daniel’s face drained.

Aaron muttered something under his breath.

Rebecca looked at the three men.

“Why is a twenty-year-old demolition tag buried behind your house?”

Rachel stared at Daniel.

He had told her the debris was from an old patio.

Rebecca stepped closer to the pit.

Then she saw another object in the exposed soil.

A strip of metal.

Stamped:

CITY TEMPORARY STAGING PERMIT.

Rebecca went still.

“This yard wasn’t just filled.”

May you like

She looked at Daniel.

“It was a disposal site.”
