Chapter 1 - THE CANCELED OPERATION

Claire Bennett had already signed the consent forms when Nurse Nora Ellis rushed back into the room with a face that made everything cold.

Claire lay in the hospital bed under harsh white lights, an IV taped to her arm, her blond hair tied loosely back from a face made pale by pain and exhaustion. The surgery team had marked the board. The anesthesiologist had already spoken to her. She was prepared to be afraid.

She was not prepared for Nora’s voice.

“Mrs. Bennett… your husband canceled the surgery.”

Claire stopped breathing.

“What?”

Nora shut the door behind her.

“He called administration using your medical proxy. He said the operation was postponed pending ‘further family review.’”

Claire stared.

“No.”

Nora hesitated.

“There’s more.”

Claire pushed herself upright too fast and winced.

“What?”

“The $499,000 surgical deposit is gone.”

For a second the room seemed to drift away from her.

“What do you mean gone?”

“Transferred out of the account the hospital had on file.”

“By who?”

Nora didn’t need to answer.

Claire reached for her phone with shaking hands.

Three missed calls.

Two messages from Grant.

One social video clip sent anonymously from a number she didn’t recognize.

She opened it.

Grant Bennett stood beside a sleek private jet in a navy jacket and cream trousers, one arm around Savannah Price in a red dress. They were kissing like people who believed the future already belonged to them.

Then Grant laughed straight at the camera.

“Maldives, baby!”

Savannah laughed with him.

Claire’s hand went numb around the phone.

Nora was still speaking, but the words came from far away.

“We can try to appeal the cancellation—”

Claire pulled off her wedding ring and stared at it in her palm.

The sadness came first.

Then something colder.

“Was there a transfer destination?”

Nora looked surprised that this was Claire’s first clear question.

“Yes,” she said quietly. “Not a personal account. Some kind of escrow transfer.”

Claire looked up.

“What was the name?”

Nora checked the sheet she was holding.

“Blue Horizon Option Escrow.”

Blue Horizon.

The buyer.

Claire closed her fist around the ring.

Of course.

This was not just about the affair.

It was about tomorrow morning’s board review and the seventy-two-hour spouse-proxy clause Grant had once convinced her was only a technicality.

If she was in surgery, he could speak for her.

If she was declared unfit, he could speak for her.

If she died—

Claire stopped the thought.

Nora stepped closer.

“There may still be a way to proceed, but you need to act fast.”

Claire looked at her.

“Get me the forms he used.”

Nora hesitated.

“I could lose my job.”

Claire’s voice was suddenly flat.

“If I don’t move right now, I lose my life and my company. Please.”

Nora left.

Claire opened the anonymous text number.

One new message had arrived while she watched the video.

If you disappear tonight, Grant gets your shares by morning.

Claire stared at the screen.

May you like

Then another message came.

Don’t let him bury you before the vote.
