Chapter 4 - THE SIGNATURE

The gala broke into private war almost immediately.

Evelyn ordered the nearest doors closed and cleared a side salon with the authority of a woman who had ended scandals before. Only five people remained inside: Claire, Grant, Savannah, Evelyn, and Naomi.

Grant laid the paper on a marble table.

“You signed this yesterday.”

Claire looked down.

Her name was there. So was a digital authorization code.

No.

Not hers.

Not real.

But frighteningly close.

Savannah wiped her face and straightened.

“You showed up here for theater, Claire. Fine. Let’s use facts.”

Claire looked at her.

“Facts?”

Savannah lifted her chin.

“You were terrified of surgery. You said that repeatedly. Grant moved money to protect the company because you panic every time real decisions come near your mother’s hotels.”

There it was.

Not just mistress rhetoric.

Business rhetoric.

Grant added, smooth as ever, “The surgery wasn’t canceled forever. It was delayed pending review. You were on high-dose medication. I had to think bigger than the next hour.”

Claire’s voice stayed low.

“So you kissed your strategic review beside a private jet.”

“That was after,” Savannah snapped.

Claire ignored her and touched the paper again.

The signature looked good.

Too good.

Naomi bent closer.

“Look at the timestamp.”

Claire did.

Then she understood.

“This was signed at 7:51.”

Grant said nothing.

Claire looked up.

“At 7:51 I was already in pre-op holding without my phone. But this document says patient-authenticated mobile confirmation.”

Grant smiled faintly.

“You had your phone earlier.”

Naomi said, “That’s not enough. This also references wristband validation.”

Savannah’s face changed very slightly.

Claire saw it.

Hospital wristbands.

Pre-op scanning.

Someone had used both her phone and her patient band.

Evelyn looked between them.

“Savannah,” she said slowly, “were you at the hospital?”

“No.”

Too fast.

Too flat.

Grant stepped in smoothly.

“We are not doing this. Claire is fresh out of surgery and clearly looking for a target.”

Naomi turned to him.

“And you’re holding a suspicious directive signed minutes before you transferred her surgical funds into a corporate option structure.”

“That structure saves six hundred jobs.”

Again.

There it was.

The smartest version of greed: wrap it in payroll.

Evelyn looked at Claire.

“Do you have proof this document is forged?”

“Not yet.”

“Then tonight you have emotion, scandal, and an affair. You do not yet have theft.”

Claire nodded once.

Fair.

Then her phone vibrated.

A message from Nora.

I found the restricted-access log. You need to see this NOW.

Claire opened the image attachment.

Hospital pre-op corridor access, 7:47 a.m.

Visitor override badge issued through nursing substation.

User entry photo attached.

Savannah.

Wearing a cream coat and surgical mask.

Claire lifted the phone very slowly and turned it toward Evelyn.

Savannah stopped breathing.

Evelyn stared at the screen.

Then at her daughter.

Then back at the screen again.

Savannah whispered, “Mom, I can explain.”

But before she could, Grant took one step toward Claire and spoke in a voice so low only she heard him.

“Go after her if you want,” he murmured. “The board will still remove you by morning.”

Then he smiled at the room.

And Claire realized the forged signature was not his final weapon.

It was the beginning of one.
