Chapter 9 - THE FLIGHT PLAN

Naomi’s investigator found the jet company in under three hours.
Private aviation vendors loved paperwork even when their clients loved secrecy.
The Maldives trip had been booked through Crown Meridian.
The first envelope covered the leisure flight deposit.
The second transfer—Savannah’s envelope—funded a standby route extension through Lisbon to a non-U.S. jurisdiction with favorable asset secrecy laws.
Claire stared at the itinerary.
“This wasn’t a honeymoon.”
Naomi nodded.
“It was an escape corridor.”
Then the investigator found the money trail.
The $499,000 funded Blue Horizon’s option extension.
The second transfer, $218,000, funded the escape routing.
And the earlier $3.2 million reserve diversion sat inside layered accounts waiting to move once the board approved the sale.
Grant was not just trying to win the company battle.
He was preparing to leave with part of the company’s oxygen.
Claire leaned back, pain radiating under her sternum.
“So he pushes the sale, secures a retention payout, extracts reserves, and if anything goes wrong, he flies.”
Naomi nodded.
“There’s more.”
Of course there was.
Blue Horizon’s option agreement named a future “integration consultant” entitled to an $8.6 million retention award on closing.
Grantee:
Grant Bennett.
A separate side letter promised Crown Meridian debt forgiveness if he remained in operational control for at least nine months after the sale.
Claire stared.
“He wasn’t saving Bennett Meridian.”
“No.”
“He was monetizing its surrender.”
Naomi hesitated.
“The problem is he can still argue the sale itself is good for the company.”
“And he’d be right enough to survive.”
“That’s what worries me.”
Claire’s phone rang.
Nora.
Her voice was tight.
“Claire, two hospital compliance officers just seized access to the pre-op corridor records.”
“On whose order?”
“Privacy preservation, they said. But Grant’s counsel was with them.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“He’s cleaning.”
Nora whispered, “I copied everything first. But they know I did.”
“Are you safe?”
A pause.
“I think so.”
That “think” cut through Claire harder than the scalpel had.
Grant was now broadening the damage.
He couldn’t erase the surgery.
So he was moving against the people who could explain it.
Then Nora said one last thing.
“Claire… he’s also requesting your medication notes.”
“Why?”
“To support the competency petition.”
Naomi looked up sharply.
Grant was not done framing her.
He was building a medical version of instability to match the financial one.
After the call ended, Claire stood and went to the window.
Traffic burned beneath the city like veins.
Naomi came beside her.
“What are you thinking?”
“That he’s not going to lose unless we destroy the story he’s built.”
“And?”
Claire turned back toward the documents.
“And I need Savannah on the stand before he can teach her a better lie.”
At that exact moment, the door buzzer sounded.
Naomi checked the camera.
It was Evelyn Price.

And she was carrying an envelope marked, in Savannah’s handwriting:
IF HE LIES TO ME, OPEN THIS.
