Chapter 1 - SURPRISED?

Elena Vale collapsed before the first course was cleared.
One second she was sitting upright at the long dining table.
The next she jerked forward, swept an arm across the place settings, and sent plates and glasses crashing onto the marble floor.
“El—”
Her breath caught.
She slid from the chair.
One knee hit first.
Then both hands.
She grabbed the table edge and reached toward her husband.
“Elliot… help me.”
Elliot did not move toward her.
He moved toward the papers.
That was when Elena knew.
Not suspected.
Knew.
He snatched the transfer documents from beside his plate and slammed them onto the table.
A pen landed beside Elena’s trembling hand.
“Sign it. Now.”
Vivian Vale stepped closer.
Arms folded.
Watching.
Elena stared up at both of them.
“Please…”
Elliot knocked her reaching hand aside.
Then grabbed her wrist.
Shoved the pen between her fingers.
Clamped his hand over hers.
“SIGN THE HOUSE OVER!”
He dragged her hand toward the signature line.
Elena resisted.
Weakly.
Her pen hovered inches from the paper.
Then Elliot froze.
His grip disappeared.
He grabbed his throat.
His eyes widened.
“What’s happening to me?!”
He staggered backward.
Hit a dining chair.
Knocked it sideways.
Elena stopped struggling.
Her expression changed.
Elliot convulsed briefly.
Then collapsed onto the marble.
The pen rolled away.
Vivian screamed his name and dropped beside him.
Elena placed both palms on the table.
Slowly stood.
Straight.
Steady.
No gasping.
No collapse.
Vivian looked up.
Horror replaced calculation.
Elena met her eyes.
Smiled faintly.
“Surprised?”
Vivian’s mouth opened.
Elena looked toward Elliot.
Then toward the fallen papers.
“What did you think was going to happen tonight?”
Vivian did not answer.
That silence told Elena there was more than one secret at the table.
After Elliot collapsed, Elena’s first instinct was not triumph.
It was confusion.
She had expected:
threats,
rage,
perhaps another attempt to grab the papers.
Not this.
For half a second she wondered whether standing up would expose that she had exaggerated her own symptoms.
Then she looked at him on the floor.
That calculation disgusted her.
She told Vivian:
“Call 911.”
Vivian already had her phone out.
Paramedics arrived quickly.
Elena gave them room.
No taunting.
No revenge speech.
The single word:
May you like
“Surprised?”
was the last theatrical thing she allowed herself that night.
