Chapter 11 - THE MAN WHO SIGNED FOR LUCAS
Professional investigators examined Richard’s digital-signature use.
The result was devastating.
Richard had used Lucas’s certificate twelve times under the medical authorization.
Eleven were routine.
Insurance forms.
Hospital access.
One was the continuity package.
The system flagged it for scope review.
Richard manually overrode the warning.
Reason:
Urgent family instruction.
Whose instruction?
Margaret’s assistant.
Not Lucas.
Richard had known the signature use was questionable.
He did it anyway.
His defense remained:
He believed Margaret spoke for Lucas on urgent family matters.
Lucas stared.
“That is your defense?”
“For fifteen years, she often did.”
Again.
History turned into permission.
Richard had learned the Kane family system perfectly.
That did not save him.
The state bar opened an investigation.
Prosecutors reviewed possible forgery and fraud charges.
Richard resigned as family counsel.
The resignation did not end the investigation. The signature provider produced a technical audit showing Richard had opened the scope-warning screen for twenty-three seconds before overriding it. He could no longer claim the system had automatically treated the document as routine. He had seen the warning and chosen to continue.
Margaret’s assistant also testified that Richard asked her to phrase the authorization as “urgent family instruction” rather than “Margaret Kane approval” because the first description would pass internal review faster.
Before leaving, he looked at Lucas.
“You all want me to be the villain because I put on paper what this family has done informally for decades.”
Lucas hated him.
Because the sentence was partly true.
